Board Members and Staff

Sylvia Pearson, President

Ms. Pearson has been a lifelong advocate for individuals with serious mental illness and is currently a member of the Behavioral Health Advisory Council for the State of Louisiana. She also most recently held the mantle of Executive Director here at The Extra Mile of Southeast Louisiana.

 

Bill Knecht,LCSW/BACS, Office Manager

“Having worked in health and mental health for over 40 years, TEM is vital in helping families, especially as other services to such families are continuing to be cut back.”

Mr. Knecht received his Master’s in Social Work from Tulane University in 1973, however he has worked in mental health, substance abuse and program management since 1967. He is the Former Director of New Orleans Methadone Clinic and Touro Infirmary Chronic Pain Program and Former Chairman of ERACE (ERACISM). He was also an Adjunct Professor at the Tulane School of Social Work and is currently a Field Supervisor for both Tulane and SUNO School of Social Work students. Mr. Knecht has a private practice specializing in couples work, sex therapy, and sexual compulsions treatment.

 

Nancy Moore, Treasurer

I have served as Treasurer for the organization ERACE and also a member of NAMI. I think The Extra Mile is important to our community because of the support and advocacy it provides to the clients we serve.”

Ms. Moore has worked with not-for-profit and community outreach organizations for many years, becoming a Board member of The Extra Mile of Southeast Louisiana in 2015 and has been serving in the position of Treasurer since the Fall of 2017. She has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the District of Columbia and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.  She has traveled the country extensively as a military spouse, settling in the New Orleans area in 1998.

 

Christine Meche, MSW,Secretary

I have been a social worker for almost 20 years and was drawn to serve on the TEMSE board to be part of such a great organization that plays a crucial part in making a positive difference in people’s lives.”

Ms. Meche received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1997. She has been a member of the Extra Mile since 2013 and currently serves as the Secretary. Ms. Meche works with adults with both mental illness and substance abuse issues and is currently a social worker at University Medical Center. She enjoys volunteering for several local nonprofit organizations and is a member of the Krewe of Muses.

Dr. Candace Cutrone, psychiatrist

Dr. Cutrone is originally from New Orleans, having received her M.D. from Louisiana State University Medical Center and serving her Residency at Ochsner Hospital in psychiatry. She currently practices general psychiatry in the New Orleans area and is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association, and the Southern Psychiatric Association.

Mary Margaret Hevron, BSN

  “The Extra Mile focuses on real needs in the community and makes a positive difference in many lives.”    

      Mrs. Hevron graduated from Newcomb College in 1968 with a degree in Political Science. She taught  World History at the Secondary Level in the Atlanta Public Schools. She managed her spouse’s medical practice in Metairie for 10 years.

     For the past 25 years she has co-directed the Trinity Medical Mission to Central America. With another nurse she established wound care and minor surgery clinics. She also organized and operated a free pharmacy to complement the medical care. As a result of this experience and the contact with patients, she decided to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated in 1999 with a BSN from LSUMC. She worked as a surgical nurse at Charity Hospital and as a hospice nurse with Odyssey Hospice.   After Katrina she volunteered at Operation Blessings – a free primary care clinic and pharmacy in New Orleans East, caring for post-Katrina survivors. She is presently a Eucharist Minister at Trinity Church.
